Mary Chastain Yopp

Mary Chastain Yopp, died December 7, 2008 at Memorial University Medical Center. She was born in Hartwell, Georgia, daughter of the late George and Ruth Chastain. Mary beat on top of any flat surface as if it were a piano at age four. When she was about seven, she was banging on the piano and played a chorus of "Everybody Ought to Love Jesus". She learned hymns from radio and church and at age nine was the youngest church pianist around. She played for bible school and church and she and her sisters had a radio program on WKLY in Hartwell. In high school, she and a friend sang at the theater on Saturday's before the movies. Music was her life. She gave her talents to her church and helped people write her music, a service she dedicated her life to. Through her years of playing, many people told her that her music would make a sick person well. Mary worked in retail throughout Savannah for over 25 years, retiring from J.B. White Merchandise Mercantile and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Her first husband, Benjamin T. Poole preceded her in death.
Surviving are her husband, Wallace Gardner Yopp of Savannah; son, Rodney Poole of Savannah; daughter, Barbara Mobley and her husband, Ernie Lombardi of Jacksonville, FL; Gail Jarriel of Cobbtown, GA; sister, Sara Weaver of Greenville, SC; grandson, Gary Jarriel and his wife, Donnie of Collins, GA; granddaughters, Staci and Amada Mobley of Neptune Beach, FL; Beth Bodily and her husband, David of Killeen, TX; great granddaughter, Darci Bodily of Killeen, TX; great grandson, Mitchell Bodily of Killeen, TX; and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
